What is UVC?
UVC radiation consists of short-wavelength ultraviolet light between 200 and 280 nm, which possesses unique antimicrobial properties
  • 01
    Ultraviolet (UV) light
Ultraviolet (UV) light is generally divided into UVA (315–400 nm), UVB (280–315 nm) and UVC (200–280 nm).
  • 02
    UVC band
UVC light (200-280 nm), termed 'solar blind' as it's filtered by the ozone layer, uses its short wavelength and high energy to quickly dismantle the genetic material in bacteria and viruses.
  • 03
    The Principle of UVC Sterilization
By damaging microbial DNA and RNA, it causes rapid cell death and achieves a highly efficient, broad-spectrum sterilization effect.
Germicidal Properties

The short wavelength of UVC gives it powerful germicidal capabilities. When UVC radiation interacts with bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, it can directly disrupt their DNA and RNA structures. This disruption prevents the pathogens from replicating and carrying out their normal life cycles, effectively rendering them harmless.
How does UVC work to kill germs?
1
High-Energy Photons
UVC light, with wavelengths between 200–280 nm, emits high-energy photons which are absorbed by the DNA or RNA of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi).
2
Bases Crosslinking
The absorbed energy causes structural damage to the genetic material. UVC induces the formation of dimers (linking thymine bases in DNA or uracil in RNA), distorting the helical structure.
3
Strand breaks
The energy may break the DNA/RNA strands, preventing replication or transcription.
4
Inactivation of Replication
The damaged genetic material cannot be properly read or copied, rendering the microorganism unable to replicate or function.
Broad-Spectrum Effectiveness
UVC radiation effectively inactivates a broad spectrum of pathogens (including drug-resistant strains) by inducing irreparable damage to microbial DNA/RNA, targeting essential genetic material rather than surface proteins.
Non-Chemical Disinfection
UVC disinfection provides residue-free microbial inactivation, offering significant advantages over chemical alternatives for critical applications including water purification, air sterilization, and food processing.
What is a UVC LED?
A UVC LED is a semiconductor device that generates UVC light when energized. Unlike traditional UVC sources (e.g., mercury lamps), UVC LEDs are solid-state, mercury-free, and highly energy-efficient.
Photon Energy
UVC photons penetrate microbial cells, damaging their genetic material (DNA/RNA).
Wavelength Efficiency
The optimal germicidal wavelength is 265 nm, closely matching UVC LEDs’ output range (270–280 nm).
Dosage Matters
Effectiveness depends on intensity (μW/cm²) and exposure time to ensure pathogens receive lethal UV energy (based upon the formula: Dose = Intensity × Time).
UVC LED Technology and Advantages
A UVC LED is a semiconductor device designed to emit UVC light upon the passage of an electric current.

Solid State Technology
UVC LEDs are solid-state devices, making them more durable and reliable compared to traditional UVC sources (such as mercury lamps).
Compact Size
UVC LEDs are small and can be easily integrated into various devices and systems, enabling new applications that were not feasible with larger traditional lamps.
Mercury-Free
Unlike mercury lamps, UVC LEDs do not contain mercury, making them more environmentally friendly.

 Long Lifespan
UVC LEDs have a long operational life, often exceeding 10,000 hours, and do not degrade significantly over time.

Energy Efficiency
UVC LEDs are highly energy-efficient, converting a significant portion of electrical energy into UVC light.

Instant On/Off
UVC LEDs can be turned on and off instantly without affecting their lifespan, unlike traditional lamps that may require warm-up time and can be damaged by frequent switching.
Applications of UVC LED Disinfection
UVC is a proven solution for killing germs and ensuring thorough disinfection in terms of air and water purification.
  • Air Sterilizer
Airborne pathogens like bacteria and viruses are deactivated when exposed to UVC LED light, resulting in cleaner, safer indoor air.
  • Water Treatment
Capable of neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, it provides a reliable solution for safe drinking water.
  • Surface Disinfection
Effectively sanitizes various surfaces without harsh chemicals, targeting specific areas for thorough germ elimination.
