On July 30th, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, in collaboration with MASSPHOTON LIMITED (hereinafter referred to as "our company"), held the launching ceremony of Hong Kong's first ultra-high vacuum "third-generation semiconductor gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxial wafer pilot line", aiming at promoting the development of Hong Kong's microelectronics industry and further improve the local innovation and technology ecosystem.
Leading Technology, Planning for the Future Liao Yitao, the CEO of our company, pointed out in his speech that the company plans to establish the first global R&D center for the epitaxial process of third-generation semiconductor gallium nitride in the Science Park and open the first ultra-high vacuum mass production type gallium nitride epitaxial wafer pilot line in the Innovation Park. It is expected to invest at least HK$200 million in Hong Kong and set up a R&D team, driving the layout of the entire third-generation semiconductor industry chain.
MASSPHOTON LIMITED currently has factories on the Chinese mainland founded by a team of returnee semiconductor experts, who have more than 20 years of technical accumulation and mass production experience in the gallium nitride epitaxy industry. We adopt the world-leading and unique ultra-high vacuum third-generation semiconductor epitaxy technology in China, breaking through the limitations of traditional epitaxy technology equipment and processes, and successfully producing high-performance gallium nitride optoelectronic and power semiconductor wafers. These wafers are widely used in cutting-edge fields such as large-scale health care, consumer electronics, Micro-LED displays, photovoltaics, data centers, electric vehicles, rail transit, and ultra-high voltage power transmission. This not only injects strong impetus into enhancing Hong Kong's original scientific and technological R&D level and new productive forces, but also provides the most crucial upstream wafer mass production technology support for Hong Kong's semiconductor manufacturing industry chain. Liao Yitao said that the pilot line launched in Hong Kong hopes to further enhance the R&D and pilot test capabilities on the basis of the existing mass production level, especially through joint R&D in combination with the existing technologies of Hong Kong's microelectronics experts to ensure competitiveness and technological leadership in the global market.
Government Support, Facilitating Innovation Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, said that one of the development directions in the "Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint" announced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is to improve the innovation and technology ecosystem and promote Hong Kong's "new industrialization". The government will strongly support the advanced manufacturing industry, including the establishment or expansion of advanced manufacturing production lines for the semiconductor industry in Hong Kong. Wong Kwok-keung, CEO of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, pointed out that the decision of MASSPHOTON LIMITED to settle in the Science Park and the Innovation Park, bringing its cutting-edge technology and experience to Hong Kong, will become an important milestone in the development process of Hong Kong's microelectronics industry and new industrialization. He also said that the Science Park has always coordinated with the government to fully develop the microelectronics industry. There are more than 200 park companies engaged in the microelectronics industry under its umbrella. He hopes to enhance Hong Kong's microelectronics R&D strength and industrialization and help Hong Kong become an international innovation and technology center. On the day of the event, witnessed by Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Zhang Manli, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Wang Guofan, Deputy President (Advanced Manufacturing and New Energy Technology) of the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises, Wong Kwok-keung, CEO of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Liao Yitao, CEO of MASSPHOTON LIMITED, and Huang Yongyao, shareholder and investor of MASSPHOTON LIMITED, the signing of the agreement was carried out by Oscar Or, Acting Chief Corporate Development Officer and Head of Innovation and Technology Ecosystem Business Development of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, and Zhao Chunlei, Chief Marketing Officer of MASSPHOTON LIMITED.
Settling in Hong Kong, Focusing on Talent Liao Yitao, the CEO of our company, said that we plan to move into the newly built Microelectronics Center (MEC) of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and build Hong Kong's first R&D and pilot production line for 8-inch gallium nitride epitaxial wafers. Based on our company's epitaxial wafers, we will jointly develop downstream gallium nitride optoelectronic and power devices with the Microelectronics Research and Development Institute (MRDI) in Hong Kong. Through the pilot R&D and incubation of new products, we will establish a cutting-edge and complete patent package for ultra-high vacuum gallium nitride epitaxy technology and products. The pilot test will be completed and the construction of the gallium nitride epitaxial mass production line will be launched in Hong Kong within three years, , and the epitaxial wafer products made in Hong Kong will be promoted to the global market. The choice to settle in Hong Kong is to enable the company to develop in an international environment that is intensive in technology, talent, and capital. In the future, we will recruit PhD graduates and professionals engaged in semiconductor development in Hong Kong. He also believes that Hong Kong has an irreplaceable advantage in the cultural exchange between the East and the West, which is helpful for promoting the epitaxial wafer products made in Hong Kong to the global market. In addition, due to Hong Kong's international characteristics and talent reserve, no matter what type of products are finally produced, they always need to face the global market, and Hong Kong has an irreplaceable advantage in this regard. Therefore, the company will pay special attention to Hong Kong's talent in various fields such as R&D, product development, and marketing. The strategic measures of MASSPHOTON LIMITED to establish a global R&D center and a pilot line in Hong Kong not only inject new vitality into Hong Kong's microelectronics industry but also contribute new forces to global scientific and technological progress and economic development. We have every reason to believe that in the near future, Massachusetts Photonics Technology will lead the gallium nitride semiconductor industry to a more brilliant future with its outstanding R&D strength and innovation ability. At the same time, the successful implementation of this project will further promote the improvement and development of Hong Kong's innovation and technology ecosystem and inject strong impetus into Hong Kong's long-term development.
